The Whistlers in the Dark by Victoria Williamson: Review

Hello and today it's my day on the Write Reads blog tour for Whistlers in the Dark by Victoria Williamson. A big thank you to the lovely people at The Write Reads for making this happen!
I recieved an ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Plot time: Set in Scotland 159 AD. 13 year old Felix is a half roman half Damnonii boy who is trying to fit in the encampment since his father went missing. Meanwhile Jinny is a headstrong Damnonii girl getting into mischief. When a tragic accident brings the two together they will have to work together to quell the aincient threats and stop war between their two groups.

This book may be my new favourite middle grade read I've read since The Strangeworlds travel Agency by LD. Lapinski and  I promise you that is a huge compliment. This book has everything a good middle grade novel needs and more besides. Jinny in particular really reminded me of Flick from that series.

The characters were fantastic. I loved Felix's story of trying to fit in with the romans and how he struggled with them. I think that would really resonate with children. Jinnmy in particular was my favourite character though she's the exact sort of heroine I wish I'd read about a kid.

Looking at an often forgotten peice of Scottish history this book touches on scottish folklore and history in such a fun and interesting way. This book is completely unique and tells us so much about scottish tribal culture in a way suited for children!

Overall I loved this book it's such a fun read. I cant wait to read more from this author.
