Junk Boy by Tony Abbott Review
I have been mighty lucky this year in being sent tonnes of amazing ARCs. This book was sent to me by Harper 360 YA in exchange for an honest review. As usual I cannot be bought and my opinions are always honest (more info on this can be found in myContact +Policies section on the top of my blog). Anyway with that formality out of the way lets go on to a review of this gem!
Junk Boy is a very fascinating read. Written entirely in verse the book follows troubled Bobby Lang an outcast teen with a difficult home life as he gets entangled in the life of troubled artist Rachel. Both of them have a lot of baggage and very different dreams.
Firstly this is not a romance. At all. I just want that out of the way because 1.eww no thanks and 2. Rachel is a big old lesbian and I think I love her. She's fantastically flawed and wonderfully spiky. Bobby as well is brilliantly flawed and conflicted. If this book is about anything its that broken people can keep going no matter what.
This book really surprised me in both its beauty and its strength. The verse is often really powerful and at times I just sat there staring at it. the descriptions of the broken camper van are surprisingly beautiful and the way the story unfolds is so carefully crafted it's like a puzzle box.
Bobby and Rachel's dynamic as well is really unique. It's less about a friendship and about two people caught in two different storms being in the same area for a while. It's sad yet beautiful and the way it unfolds is breathtaking.
Overall this book was a beautiful surprise. I loved it and one hundred percent recommend it to anyone who fancies reading something new and utterly transfixing.
