Act Cool by Tobly McSmith: A Review

Here we are again with another ARC review. So thank you so much to Harper360 for sending me this book in exchange for an honest review as usual policies are in the header of my blog.

Anyway moving on! In todays Covid world theatres seem a long way away so it was great to live vicariously through aspiring actor August Greene as he attempts to fulfill his dreams by getting into a prestigious acting school. Although while everything seems rosy its anythign but as his parents have made it clear he can only attend the school if he doesn't transition. The effect this has on august is profound and heartbreaking as he tried to be himself without losing everything he loves.

This book was a quick thought provoking breezy read. I loved hearing all about the bejind the scenes world of acting school andall the cliques, rivalries and sheer awkwardness going on. August is an adorably awkward person trying very hard to fit in and he was incredibly relatable.

This book would make the perfect holiday read. It's a very sweet book with an important message that is exceptionally relevent at the moment. It touches on some very important topics such as representation in theatre, conversion therapy and who should be able to tell which story.

Finally this book is going to go down very well with theatre and musical fans. There is a reference to a musical or show on almost any page so any Hamilton fans dying for a fix will defintiley find it here!

Overall this book was a quick fun read with an important message. But most importanly it's made me realise how much I miss watchign musicals and that I should get back to that soon! I think August would approve!
