Logan Lucky- The Heist of the Season

If ever there was a time for a fun heist movie it is now and boy has Sodenburgh delivered. This review is a teensey bit older than I'd like it to be but stuff has happened and my priorities had to shift around a little bit. Anyway let's get on to possibly one  of the best comedy thrillers of the year maybe of the decade. This review is completely SPOILER FREE

SUMMARY TIME: When Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) is laid off his job of construction at a motor racing arena he decides to plot a heist with the help of his brother Clyde (Adam Driver and sister Mellie (Riley Keough). They enlist the help of notorious robber Joe Bang (Daniel Craig) to assist them in the ultimate heist to rob the motor arena Jimmy worked at.

This film is a delight. Thats the only way I can describe it. It's an utterly amusing confection that I love to bits and both want a sequel and don't in equal measure. If you ever wanted a film that feels like the love child of the Coen Brothers and Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton this is the film for you. It's got that vaguely disjointed yet joyful feel to it that will have you wanting to rewatch it and rewatch it for years to come.

I think big props have to be given to Daniel Craig as Joe Bang. After a good stint as the suavest super agent in the business seeing Craig peroxide his hair to play a hillbilly heist expert was exactly what was needed. If ever you had doubts about his ability to play other characters they will be thrown out by just how funny he was in this movie. The other breakout for me was Riley Keough as the car obsessed hairdresser sister of the Logans. She too is a delight and really really fun.

The story itself is very Oceans 11-y in scope but less polished and far more silly. However it has just a touch more real world to it. It's got this hint of sadness that all the good comedies do. This is super evident with clyde (Adam Driver) who is strung along by his brother throughout the entire film. One of the twists fixes that though.

This film also had the gift o actually being laugh out loud funny. It seems to have been a while since their has been a good comedy heist movie out but this one definitley does its job well. In particular every scene with the Bang brothers had me in stitches.

I realise that the scene with the daughter at the beauty pageant is probably going to get so many Little Miss Sunshine comparisons it's not even worth mentioning and the film definitely has that feel to it. However I think it's more akin to Hail Caesar! (which is damn underrated if you ask me) the moment she takes to the stage and confidently sings the song of her home it really reminds of George Clooney's monologue. It's a truly fantastic moment, uplifting, slightly weird and exactly the scene that personifies this films spirit.

Overall this film is honestly one of the most fun heist movies I have seen recently. It never gets bogged down in itself and is almost completely bonkers. Keep and eye for cameos because some big names pop up for few minute bursts. Definitley go and see this when you have a chance.
