The Accountant- These numbers contain one hell of a heart

I have a lot of feelings about The Accountant. I have never seen a fiction film that has an autistic protagonist that isn't basically a glorified lifetime movie about overcoming obstacles. Sheldon Cooper's overarching bullcrap has tainted portrayals of autism for years and it upsets me greatly. The Accountant bucks the magical Sheldon Cooper/Sherlock trope and gives us a nice juicy antihero and I am so damn into it.

52 Films by Women- Week 46

So this week I'm going a bit different as I realised something. The oldest film I have watched for this challenge was from 1982 (Fast Times at Ridgemont High all the way back in week 9) which is a shame as female director have been making film way before that. In fact they go back way to the beginning of cinema and much like today actresses directed too take for example Mabel Normand, a popular silent film star and a director in her own right. So I wanted to go back in time today and do something a lot older than my typical set so I'm going 51 years before Fast Times at Ridgemont High to bring you...

52 Films by Women- Week 44

Doctor Strange- Marvel's most visually stunning film yet!

Marvel has taken a step away from the gritty fighting heroes and brought in a boatload of magicand Mads Mikkelson in severe eyeliner. This  has made probably Doctor Strange the most fun Marvel movie since Guardians of the Galaxy.  It's also incredibly pretty.

HALLOWEEN WEEK- 52 Films by Women- Sunday- Week 43

So Halloween is tomorrow and it's time for another film directed by a woman so obviously it's time for a horror-y one. Cue the music guys because this one is quirky creepy fun.

Saturday, 29 October 2016

So Halloween falls on a school night this year! So all you younger folks may find watching a big scary horror movie a huge mistake! Also if you are fraidy cat you may want to step away from The Blair Witch Project and go for something less scary. This list is to help you find something new to you but super fun as well as just creepy enough for Halloween!

Friday, 28 October 2016

It's National Frankenstein Friday! A day that is always held on the last Friday of October to celebrate the book and by proxy it's incredible writer Mary Shelley! Obviously it's a holiday thats slots perfectly into Halloween Week as well!!

So for this most auspicious of occasions I thought it would be fun to do 5 cool facts about Frankenstein!

Thursday, 27 October 2016

So I figured it would be fun to make a costume post! So here are three of my faviorite characters that would be pretty easy to dress up as. Hope you all enjoy!

52 Films by Women- Week 42

Only 10 more weeks my friends!! The year is closing in fast!!!! Holy Hell. Sorry this is late by the way. This week has got away from me completely and utterly and I have just been feeling completely sludgy and ick.
Anywho on with the challenge I can't just sit around and feel miserable.
This weeks was meant to be a scary one in lead up to Halloween but sadly life got away from me and I didn't have time so I went for one which was advertised as less scary but freaked me the hell out.
It was..

Ruby Sparks
Dir: Valerie Faris & Jonathan Dayton
Ruby Sparks seems like a standard Manic Pixie movie for the first 20 minutes which drag a bit in all honesty. Those 20 minutes reminded me how amazing and fantastic Faris and Dayton's film Little Miss Sunshine was (Which I love to pieces, BEST MOVIE). Anywho After that beginning it kicks into itself starting nice and then spiraling out of control. Paul Dano as usual is amazing and where is this damn boys Oscar he is perfect in everything. The scene where Dano's character controls Ruby as she is clearly upset is truly horrible and scarier than any horror film. This film was such a surprise to me and it shocked me to the very end.

52 Films by Women- WEEK 41 @ THE BFI London Film Festival

Long time readers may remember that last year I went to BFI's London Film festival I saw both Chronic (which I never reviewed because its too good to put into words and its hard to shriek excitedly in blog form) and the Lady in the Van (review). This year I decided to combine the 52filmsbywomen challenge with my annual excursion to the festival. There weren't many lady directed pics this year but five were on my mind as possibles  to) 1. Raw 2. American Honey 3.Planetarium 4. Queen of Katwe and 5. the film I actually saw which was....

Friday, 7 October 2016

So this week we aren't doing a documentary. It's also directed by just one woman not a male female directing team so i'm officially breaking that streak I kept going for two consecutive weeks! This ones a little bit infamous and I'm sure you'll all of heard of it, its.....

Dir: Susanne Bier
I have always had a fondness for films that have been through development hell. The ones whose director dropped out or whose studios decided to cut them into a genre at the last minute. They always have a strange and slightly weird honesty about them they stand there and go "yep, thats what happened" and you have to admire them for that. It doesn't always make them good (they often aren't) but it does give them some interest. This interest is what compelled me to watch the notoriously butchered and hidden Serena. A film that had been kicking about forever then finally thrown unceremoniously into the outside world. How could I resist?

The truth is this movie is not the train wreck it's painted to be. In fact it feels like a very very old 40'a era film rather than a new movie. Toby Jones puts in a very good performance. However it's biggest sin is that it seems to be totally plotless. Just a lot of misery and pretty people. But honestly this movie is no where near as bad as people say it is which I guess isn't the glowing endorsement I wanted it to be but hey we can't all get what we want.

Very Fine Dispatches from Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events!!

Look away now and shut this blog post because this following post is full of disaster, sadness and morose behaviour. I am of course talking about Netflix's Series of Unfortunate Events. Yesterday they grimly posted a depressing look at the sad and horrible tale that they will be telling on the small screen.
For those with a fragile disposition do not click below the cut and see the newest sneak peak. It will only cause you great distress.

Friday, 30 September 2016

Welp September's done. It seems to be a month of good TV with both the old (Red Dwarf XI which is proving to be a brilliant season) and the new (Designated Survivor which is brilliant).  Now come and catch up on all you missed with my Monthly roundup!

52 Films by Women- Week 39

Firstly realised I had a numbering issue and has made a mistake all posts have been re-named to the correct number. We are on week 39 not on Week 40. I only realised this through letterboxd. It seems like I miss-numbered  Swallows and Amazons. Now everything is where it should be and that is all fixed.

Anyway on with the show. Todays film is another documentary (I know) co-directed by a man (I know) but unlike Indie Game this one is a Netflix Original.
It is...

Audrie and Daisy
Dir: Bonni Cohen & Jon Shenk
Audrie and Daisy isn't the easiest watch, It's also very hard to write about. It's full of hard truths about the way people treat school and college aged sexual assault survivors. Watching the situation unfold after the hardships the girl endured and watching law enforcement do little to nothing I felt heartbroken. But I think it needs to be watched so people understand the true extent of the situation.

Sunday, 25 September 2016

Raindance has been running for the last few days but as it keeps going I thought there would be some time to quickly tell you four unmissable films. Especially as I haven't seen much coverage I thought it might good to put out the names of some of the best looking films there.

52 Films by Women- Week 38

This week we are back to documentaries again! Don't judge me! The selection on Netflix is just really good at the moment.

Indie Game: the Movie
Dir: Lisanne Pajot & James Swirsky
This one I came across by accident on Netflix and became intrigued by it. Finally I had time to watch it this week and it was brilliant. Following three games (Braid, Fez and Super Meat Boy) you see them in all there guts and glory. It's not polishing these people at all in fact you see them as just that people. It's brilliant and I would recomend this documentary to everyone. We might just have a new documentary gold standard to beat on this challenge guys!
